The elephant in the copywriter’s room: AI

When I say A LOT of people ask me about how AI affects my work as a writer, I’m not exaggerating.

It’s a question I get asked constantly, and more so all the time. When I introduce myself as a copywriter, it’s one of the most common follow up questions I get.

And, I’d be lying to say that AI isn’t greatly changing the field.

Many issues come to mind, both in favour or in opposition to AI:

  • Many small businesses rely on AI for everything from their website copy, emails, note taking or Instagram posters and absolutely find it a game changer. They don’t have extra time to write a newsletter or blog and are happy to let AI spit content out for them to use, especially when it’s free.

  • Others absolutely disdain the use of AI and want you to prove that AI won’t come into play in any shape or form in creation. They notice the “AI accent” in content, and will scroll past anything that suggests it’s not human created.

Me? I’m falling in the middle right now. (And I’m not just trying to be diplomatic).

I don’t think that AI is the devil. We can’t ignore it anymore. I understand how it’s a useful tool for many small businesses.

For myself, if it functions as an “assistant” for research purposes, organizing notes, or general editing after I’ve done the writing, it can be helpful. I sometimes use AI for the back-end admin work of my business.

For my writing, rough draft to final: hard no.

And it’s not simply because I am a writer and want to maintain integrity, doing the work myself. It’s also because I firmly believe that the writing I do still requires humanity.

Working mostly with small, service-based businesses that heavily rely on connecting with their community, my job requires carefully curated copy that builds trust. Getting to the heart and values of a business, and then conveying this message intentionally, is what I do. AI just can’t feel the heart of community businesses in the same way.

I have had conversations with a number of my clients who have tried using AI for their marketing copy, with unsuccessful results. They come to me because the AI blog or the AI written email just wasn’t landing well. They realize after this experiment that they need an expert. They appreciate how I get to know them and their business, and how the copy benefits from our very human working relationship.

At this point in my life and business, I realize more and more that building meaningful connections with others counts for so much in life. And I think most people feel the same – we want to invest in businesses that showcase this very human element.

AI just can’t replicate this.
